Oltre a Metropolis...

Raf e Harvey: Bilanciare i giochi sui quali abbiamo lavorato, come Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah e Deus Ex, è sempre stata una sfida.

Ci potete dare qualche dettaglio a riguardo?

Come otterremo esattamente questi incantamenti?

Raf e Harvey: Nessuna. Ci siamo dedicati solamente all'esperienza single player.

We loved Dishonored’s art style and setting when we had the opportunity to view it. What were the most influencing titles, books or movies that influenced the creation of Dunwall? In addition to Lang's Metropolis...

Raf and Harvey: London, for one. Our art team traveled there and took photos. A dash of Cthulhu and some Victorian influences as well.

As we understood, Dishonored will be structured in open zones, presenting one main mission and several other "side-missions" to complete in the area. Will we be able to travel across several areas of the game or we will be linked to a single mission area until the objective is complete?

Raf and Harvey: The game is a fixed sequence of missions, but the actual play space for each mission is riddled with options and side paths. The player can use stealth, combat, seek alternate story resolutions, do side quests, use rooftops, possess a fish and swim, and other fun things like that. But it's definitely a mission game, similar in structure to Deus Ex 1.

Will there be any kind of story branching with different endings or paths to follow?

Raf and Harvey: The player's actions and style influence subtle things across the game and the potential end-games. For instance, if the player is playing brutally with a high body count, there will be more plague-infected Weepers, more rats, different dialogue reactions in some places, and a few scenes that play out in a darker way. Also, the city ends up destabilized and the ending is darker. By contrast, if the player uses stealth and plays as a more surgical assassin, the city ends up more stable with a brighter future.

Dishonored is a game about stealth and has the choice to use brute force instead. It reminds us in many aspects to Human Revolution. In the title by Eidos you also could use brute force and in fact it was much more effective to do that despite the hacking and stealthish tricks. How are you balancing the benefits of using a stealth approach and a direct one? How will be the player choosing the more difficult approach be rewarded?

Raf and Harvey: Balancing the games we've worked on like Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic or Deus Ex, is always a challenge. But we feel brutal combat and stealth are equally challenging and rewarding in different ways.

Will these approaches affect the gameplay somehow? We heard about a sort of "evil meter" so that the city and its inhabitants will change if you will kill many or not. Can you share some details with us about this?

Raf and Harvey: Yes, we track the way you play and the game reflects this in small ways. Mostly, how you play is a style preference. You choose your approach, your style, your morality; we wanted all approaches to be fun and engaging. But your decisions do affect the game in subtle ways.

Will we be able to choose not to kill a target?

Raf and Harvey: Yes. You can literally finish this assassination game without killing anyone. There are story-based alternative outcomes for the key targets. A great example: An evil, corrupt lady you must assassinate has an obsessive admirer who loves her and wants to take her away to an island home, where she will live for years most likely. You can kill her, or make a deal with her admirer.

Why exactly should I choose to kill a target by making it look like an accident (and thus making that extra effort)? Personally we love the option and we will mostly try to pass undetected, but it could be really cool if this would affect our story or mission progression!

Raf and Harvey: A lot of this is up to your desires. But extreme violence also affects the environment, the end-games, and consumes more resources.

The skill system looks promising! Especially combined with that skull trinkets enhancement system. How exactly will these enhancements unlock?

Raf and Harvey: You have weapons and equipment that can be upgraded if you collect money and spend it with a craftsman. But supernatural powers are also available through an enigmatic figure called the Outsider. Each power has two levels of advancement. Some of the powers are passive, which we call enhancements. For instance: If you kill unaware enemies, one of the enhancements turns the enemy to ash upon death. Lastly, there are bone charms that add small benefits, like one that allows you to kill and consume rare white-furred to gain mana that fuels your active powers.

Can you give us some examples on how a skill would be enhanced? We heard about specific types of rats and drinking town water to restore energy...

Raf and Harvey: One of the bone charms, which is what we assume you're referring to, allows you to regain mana by drinking water from faucets. Another bone charm allows you to possess fish longer, for instance. They're all fun. There are about 45 bone charms in the game, but most players will find 12 in a single play-through. Each time you find one, its functionality is chosen randomly from the list of 45.

We didn't really understand how the combat controls work. I guess you have one weapon bound to each one of the two triggers? Furthermore, it looks like you have a lot of options in controlling the sword and doing some pretty nifty tricks!

Raf and Harvey: You assassinate if you attack an unaware enemy. There are lots of options. Dropping from above is a special kind of assassination. In general combat, you can swing the sword to attack, use it to block, and if you block at just the right time it throws the enemy off balance. Quickly attacking an off-balance enemy assassinates him.
The right hand always controls the sword, while the left hand controls various ranged weapons (like the crossbow), traps or supernatural powers. So it's always whatever you choose in the left hand, and the sword in the right hand for melee combat and assassination.

Will we be able to modify our weapons?

Raf and Harvey: Yes. As a supernatural assassin, you have a set of tools and weapons related to stealth, combat and assassination. Corvo travels light, so you've got a limited number of weapons and devices that can be upgraded by a craftsman ally.

Will there be any kind of multiplayer available?

Raf and Harvey: None. We're dedicated to an absorbing single-player experience.

Any news on some specific content for the PC platform? Like larger textures, dedicated control scheme, graphic options and all this kind of extra stuff?

Raf and Harvey: Great controls, a PC-specific UI and higher resolution modes, for sure. Plus the option of running at 60fps if you have the right machine for it.
